What is stress?
The word Stress is used to describe both external events that make
demand on us and the internal responses they trigger.
Stress is a normal physical reaction that occurs when you feel
threatened or overwhelmed. The perception of a threat is as stressful
as a real threat. You perceive a situation as threatening or feel
overwhelmed because you are dealing with an unusually large number of
everyday responsibilities. With increasing demands of home and work
life, many people are under enormous stress. Stress in one setting can
affect stress levels in the other.
It's almost impossible to live without some stress. And most of us
wouldn't want to, because it gives life some spice and excitement. But
if stress gets out of control, it may harm your health, your
relationships, and your enjoyment of life.
When our body is subjected to stress over a long period of time, it
remains in a prolonged state of preparedness for flight or fight
Unmanaged Stress - Why it is Important
Because unmanaged stress can destroy your life because it can effect every aspect of your like:
- Relationships
- Your Health
- Your Career
Learn to manage your stress with our help!
Origins of Stress
Stress can often originate from sources we hardly ever associate with it.
Stress is an inevitable part of life. It is the motivating and
productive force of a person. Continual stress, however, can be
detrimental and destructive to one's health.
A common complaint by many is that they feel consumed with
rushing and being hurried all the time. We are rushing to get our
families into a multitude of activities and events. There are
schedules, demands and time constraints. It seems there is not enough
time in the day to do it all. We live in a fast-paced, must have it now
society. We forget what it is to relax, slow down and truly enjoy "the
present moment".
Other examples of stress that results from outside events
are job-related stress (such as when your boss gives you unreasonable
jobs, working with unreasonable customers), relationship induced stress
(such as marital problems, death of a spouse, divorce), money problems
(such as when all bills come due), etc.
Stress also exists in tandem with the pressure you feel when
you perceive that negative consequences are attached to your actions.
Stress also stems from conflict, which is not always negative.
Decision
Making under stress. The greater the stress, the greater the likelihood
that a decision-maker will choose a risky alternative. During crisis,
the ability of a group to handle difficult tasks requiring intensely
focused attention is decreased. The greater the stress, the greater the
tendency to make a premature choice of alternatives for a correct
response. The greater the stress, the less likely that individuals can
tolerate "ambiguity". Under increasing stress, there is a decrease in
productive thoughts and an increase in distracting thoughts. The
greater the stress, the greater the distortion in perception of threat
and poor judgment often occurs. The greater the fear, frustration and
hostility aroused by a "crisis", the greater the tendency to aggression
and escape behaviors.
Prolonged stress can be the cause of many illnesses and inhibit the body's ability to heal.
Clinical studies have proven a clear and direct link between stress and illness.

Emotional signs and symptoms of stress
Irritability Angry outbursts Hostility Depression Jealously
Restlessness Withdrawal Anxiousness Diminished initiative Feelings of
unreality or over-alertness Reduction of personal involvement with
others Lack of interest Tendency to cry Being critical of others
Self-deprecation Nightmares Impatience Decreased perception of positive
Experience opportunities Narrowed focus Obsessive rumination Reduced
self-esteem Insomnia Changes in eating habits and Weakened positive
emotional response reflexes.
Cognitive/Perceptual Signs and Symptoms of Stress
Forgetfulness Preoccupation Blocking Blurred vision Errors in
judging distance Diminished or exaggerated fantasy life Reduced
creativity Lack of concentration Diminished productivity Lack of
attention to detail Orientation to the past Decreased psychomotor
reactivity and coordination Attention deficit Disorganization of
thought Negative self-esteem Diminished sense of meaning in life Lack
of control/need for too much control Negative self-statements and
negative evaluation of experiences.
Behavioral Signs and Symptoms of Stress
Increased smoking Aggressive behaviors (such as driving - road
rage, etc.) Increased alcohol or drug use Carelessness Under-eating
Over-eating Withdrawal Listlessness Hostility Accident-proneness
Nervous laughter Compulsive behavior and Impatience.
Clinical studies suggest that anxiety can intensify pain,
raise blood pressure and cause a person to feel isolated and out of
control in their life.
Stress in Children and Young Adult
Children with ADD/ADHD are often in a state of stress in school.
It is therapeutic to teach them strategies (at home, school, or in
private therapy) to help them calm down and relax.
Hyperactive/impulsive children, in particular, gain the most from
learning techniques that relax their minds and bodies, recognize their
internal feelings, and release inner tension. These strategies empower
children with a feeling of peace and self-control. There are a variety
of techniques that have proven effective in helping us to slow down,
and to improve focus and awareness.
Teenagers, like adults, may experience stress everyday and can benefit
from learning stress management skills. Most teens experience more
stress when they perceive a situation as dangerous, difficult, or
painful and they do not have the resources to cope. Some sources of
stress for teens might include:
* School demands and frustrations
* Negative thoughts and feelings about themselves
* Changes in their bodies
* Problems with friends
* Unsafe living environment/neighborhood
* Separation or divorce of parents
* Chronic illness or severe problems in the family
* Death of a loved one
* Moving or changing schools
* Taking on too many activities or having too high expectations
* Family financial problems
Some teens become overloaded with stress. When it happens, inadequately managed of stress can lead to,
* Upset stomach, diarrhea, or indigestion
* Headache, backache
* Insomnia (inability to fall asleep)
* Eating too much or too little
* Feeling hostile, angry, or irritable
* Feeling anxious,
* Feeling aggress
*Withdrawal
* Avoiding other people
* Crying
* Feeling frustrated with things that normally only bother you a little
* Poor coping skills
*Drugs and /or Alcohol use
When we perceive a situation as difficult or painful, changes occur in
our minds and bodies to prepare us to respond to danger. This "fight,
flight, or freeze" response includes faster heart and breathing rate,
increased blood to muscles of arms and legs, cold or clammy hands and
feet, upset stomach and/or a sense of dread.
The same mechanism that turns on the stress response can turn it off.
As soon as we decide that a situation is no longer dangerous, changes
can occur in our minds and bodies to help us relax and calm down. This
"relaxation response" includes decreased heart and breathing rate and a
sense of well being. Teens that develop a "relaxation response" and
other stress management skills feel less helpless and have more choices
when responding to stress
Workplace Stress Some
of the biggest problems employers face today involves employee
absenteeism due to health problems and employee lack of motivation due
to stress and anger on the job. Workplace stress has a negative impact
on the business as well as on the individual. Whether the anger and
stress developed at work or home, the effects can carry over and be
reflected in the employee?s performance at work. Also, the increase in
job stress creates emotional, financial, and safety concerns for
employers and managers
What Causes Stress in the Workplace?
Job stress results from the characteristics of the employee, situations
occurring in the employee?s lives, the task required by the occupation,
and the working conditions and environment. There are different views
as to which set of circumstances is the primary cause of job stress.
Consequently, one is not more important than the other and by treating
one or all these factors, vast improvements may be seen in the
employee?s performance.
Financial
Stressed employees take more sick day.
Job stress can result in decreased productivity.
Disgruntied employees often quit after extensive investment has been made in there training.
Stressed workers make more errors.
Safety People who are
overly stressed are less attentive and can accidentally damage
equipment or injure themselves or others. This may have a long-lasting
effect on health insurance programs. At the extreme, stress can lead to
alcohol and drug consumption as well as violence towards management and
co-workers.
What are
Telebridge/ Teleclass/ Teleworkshop/Telegroup?
Teleclass are live, interactive training classes conducted
over the telephone, using a telephone "bridge" line. A bridge is
simply a telephone line that allows several people to be on the line at the
same time. You can call from the comfort of your home or office while
eliminating travels time, No traffic. No parking problems. No computer.
No time wasted. No large expenses, No dress code. It's as easy as picking up your phone and
talking to a friend.
A Teleclass is an innovative,
exciting way to share knowledge. Teleclass are just like any other ?real?
classes, but they are held over the telephone with a number of other people on
the same telephone ?bridge.
A TeleClass is a proven way to participate in live,
truly interactive skill-building programs in an hour ? on a phone call!
Research shows that 1-hour is the optimum duration for adults to maximize
TeleClass content retention. What
is a teleworkshop?
A teleworkshop is a class
that individuals participate in via the telephone, similar to a conference
call. Between 10 and 50 people call a bridge number that connects them
and their instructor together, immediately and automatically at the designated
time. The sessions are discussion-based, not lecture-based. The
participants may participate as much or as little as they wish, depending upon
their learning style. Participants do not need a computer to take a
teleworkshop. It is all done using any telephone. Participants can
call from home, work, or the beach, from any country in the world. The cost of teleworkshops is
lower than that of in-person workshops, because there isn't the usual overhead,
such as rental for a meeting room.
Teleclass and teleworkshops free up your mind to be more creative
because you don't have any visual distractions. It's similar to the experience
you have when you are reading a book and your mind creates wonderful visions,
as opposed to when you are watching TV or a movie and all the visuals are
created for you, leaving no room for your own imagination and creativity. You may find that you are more focused during
a teleclass than in a regular classroom because there are no visual
distractions. You can close your eyes and really hear what's being said by the
facilitator and the other participants.
What is a
Telegroup
They are a learning/support model that works. With a high
rate of inter-activity, telegroups allow be participants to learn rather than
simply listen to teaching.
- They are convenient.
Time is our most precious commodity. Telegroup save not only transit time
but the time wasted before and after "live" presentations.
- They are short, concise
and on target. By their definition, telegroups, conducted over a
telephone bridge line with all participants calling the same number, begin
and end at an exact time. It is recommended that telegroups do not exceed
one hour. This means that the leader/facilitator pays close attention to
helping participants "bottom-line" what they have to say. This
is also true, of course, for the leader.
- They are for everyone.
Telegroups need not be exclusive to one location. They can easily reach
participants across the hall or around the world. Anyone who has a phone
can participate.
- Chaotic.
Protocol for checking in and speaking within the group is quickly
established. There is order and a solid learning/participation
environment.
- Boring. The
lively discussions by a diverse group who bring a variety of experiences
to the conversation make telegroups one of the most exciting learning
opportunities available today.
- Unaccountable.
Group participants check in with the leader upon arrival. Attendance
records may be kept. Certificates of completion may be awarded. Tests may
be given via email or on-line. Notes from the group are frequently emailed
following the telegroup.
- Impersonal. It
is amazing how fast people develop relationships via telegroups. There is
something about the anonymity that encourages people to share and become
involved at a deeper level than they might in person and face-to-face.
The TeleClass/Teleworkshop/Telegroup begins promptly at 2 minutes after
the listed start time. A TeleClass is similar to a grad school discussion --
some lecture, some questions, some discussion. If this if your first time
taking a TeleClass, you may wonder if and how it works. It just does. It's
highly interactive and the 'flow' works well. You can listen and absorb and/or engage
in the discussion. You can always ask questions of the TeleClass Leader. Most
TeleClass/Teleworkshop/Telegroup sessions last an hour. Some meet one time
only, others meet weekly for 4-8 weeks, sometimes longer.
Once registered, you receive
confirmation including a helpful protocol guide, any pre-class materials and
the phone number to call in for the TeleClass. In the proven TeleClass
format ?You really are right there, just like in a face-to-face session, and
you are welcome to participate as much ? or as little as you choose.? Then you use
your existing phone to call into state-of-the-art telephone conferencing at the
scheduled time. While no further technology is needed, some TeleClass programs
may optionally offer further content via web or print materials.
The real benefit of TeleClass/ Teleworkshops/Telegroup is
that the entire focus is on the participant?s need to learn/confirm a specific
skill in a fun, interactive environment. Participants benefit not only from the
TeleClass Leader's expertise, but also from the comments and experiences of
other class participants as well.
. Each caller pays for a normal long-distance call into the
bridge.
